Tourmalines
Tourmalines have a wide variety of colors with one of the widest color, intensity and tone ranges of any gem species due to many different causes. Traces of iron, and possibly titanium, induce green and blue colors. Manganese produces reds and pinks, and possibly yellows. Rubellite is a name for pink, red, purplish red tourmaline. Paraiba is a very appreciated gemstone in the trade due to its special vivid blue-green color and rarity. It mainly come from the State of Paraiba, Brazil. Watermelon tourmaline is pink in the center and green around the outside. Green tourmaline may be intense green, similar to the African emerald color. Tourmalines are most commonly found in Brazil, but it is also mined in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Kenya, Madagascar and Mozambique (among other countries in Africa). California and Maine are historically important producers of fine tourmaline in the United States. Tourmaline is the October birthstone and is given also to celebrate the eight wedding anniversary.
